How Should I Organise My Bookcase?

Updated: Jul 8, 2024

This is a question I get asked all the time! There are countless ways to organise your books, from alphabetically or by genre to arranging them by colour for a pleasing rainbow effect. Whether you want your bookcase to be more of a display or purely functional, here are some tips to help you create a beautiful and practical setup.

Only Keep Books You Love

First and foremost, keep only the books you truly enjoy or that hold significance. If you have books you think you might read someday but probably won't, it's time to let them go. This makes your collection more meaningful and less cluttered.

Leave Room for Display

Leave some empty spaces for art pieces or decorative items. This makes your bookcase more visually appealing and less crowded. I always like to add some greenery to complement the colours of the books and add a fresh touch.

Experiment with Different Arrangements

Consider organising your books in different ways:

  • By Colour: Create a rainbow effect for a visually stunning display.

  • By Height: Arrange books by height to create an organised and stylish look.

  • Stacking: Stack books horizontally to maximise space and differentiate categories.

Mix Books with Decorative Items

Don't limit your bookcase to just books. Add decorative items like art pieces, plants, or personal mementos. This adds personality and makes your bookcase a focal point in the room.

Colour-Coordinate

In neutral interiors, books are often colour-coordinated with the room’s shades for a cohesive look. This can be achieved by turning the books around or wrapping them in paper. For example, I’ve used wallpaper from discontinued lines to create an amazing display, adding colour and character to the room. Alternatively, wrapping books in matching paper can keep the scheme cohesive. Which method do you prefer?

Ultimately, how you organise your bookcase depends on your style and needs. Whether you're a minimalist or a maximalist, there's a perfect method for you.
